Journal Guide

Philosophy Today publishes four times per year articles reflecting the trends and interests of contemporary philosophy. The contributors' views do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the editors of Philosophy Today. Philosophy Today publishes articles in contemporary European philosophy, focussing on phenomenology and existentialism. Articles often consider the relationship between one thinker and another (e.g., Freud or Nietzsche) across interdisciplinary lines. Philosophy Today sometimes carries articles that consider the relationship between traditional philosophical themes and phenomenology and existentialism. Each issue contains six to eight articles which vary in length from 12 to 18 pages. Articles frequently deal with the thought of Kiekegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Ricoeur. Articles have extensive footnotes and Philosophy Today does not publish book reviews.

For more than a quarter century, Philosophy and Literature has explored the dialogue between literary and philosophical studies. The journal offers a constant source of fresh, stimulating ideas in the aesthetics of literature, theory of criticism, philosophical interpretation of literature, and literary treatment of philosophy. Philosophy and Literature challenges the cant and pretensions of academic priesthoods by publishing an assortment of lively, wide-ranging essays, notes, and reviews that are written in clear, jargon-free prose.

Philosophy and Phenomenological Research is open to a variety of methodologies and traditions. This tradition of openness continues, as reflected by a statement appearing in every issue: 'PPR publishes articles in a wide range of areas. No specific methodology or philosophical orientation is required in submissions.'.

PHILOSOPHY & PUBLIC AFFAIRS contains philosophical discussions of substantive legal, social, and political problems, as well as discussions of the more abstract questions to which these discussions give rise. The journal is designed to fill the need for a periodical in which philosophers with different viewpoints and philosophically inclined writers from various disciplines can bring their distinctive methods to bear on problems of concern to everyone.

Philosophy and Rhetoric is dedicated to publication of high-quality articles involving the relationship between philosophy and rhetoric. It has a longstanding commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and welcomes all theoretical and methodological perspectives that advance the journal's mission. Philosophy and Rhetoric invites articles on such topics as the relationship between logic and rhetoric, the philosophical aspects of argumentation (including argumentation in philosophy itself), philosophical views on the nature of rhetoric held by historical figures and during historical periods, psychological and sociological studies of rhetoric with a strong philosophical emphasis, and philosophical analyses of the relationship to rhetoric of other areas of human culture and thought, political theory and law.

Philosophy & Social Criticism is a fully peer reviewed international journal that publishes original research and review articles. It presents original theoretical contributions to the latest developments in social and political thought, emphasizing the contributions of continental scholarship as it affects international theoretical developments.

Philosophy of the Social Sciences (POS), peer-reviewed and published quarterly, has served as the international, interdisciplinary forum for current research, theory, and debate on the philosophical foundations of the social sciences for 40 years. POS focuses on the central issues of the social sciences, including general methodology, the application of philosophy (especially individualism versus holism), the nature of rationality, and the history of theories and concepts.

Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanities in Medicine is ready to accept articles on the philosophy of medicine and biology, and on ethical aspects of clinical practice and research.

Philosophy, Psychiatry, & Psychology (PPP) focuses on the area of overlap among philosophy, psychiatry, and abnormal psychology. The journal advances philosophical inquiry in psychiatry and abnormal psychology while making clinical material and theory more accessible to philosophers. Each issue features both original and review articles, a "Concurrent Contents" section that lists relevant publications, and a newly expanded "International News and Notes" section.

Research into spoken language has become increasingly accessible to instrumental analysis and experimental verification. They are the underpinning of Phonetic Science for the investigation of speech in communicative settings across the world’s languages. Reflecting this communicative Phonetic Science, 'Phonetica' is an international and interdisciplinary forum that covers all aspects of the subject matter, from the phonetic and phonological descriptions of sounds and prosodies to the measuring domains of speech physiology, articulation, acoustics, and perception. 'Phonetica' thus provides a platform for a comprehensive representation of speaker-hearer interaction in languages and dialects. Papers published in this journal report expert original work dealing both with theoretical issues and with new empirical data.

Photographies seeks to construct a new agenda for theorising photography as a heterogeneous medium that is changing in an ever more dynamic relation to all aspects of contemporary culture. Photographies aims to further develop the history and theory of photography, considering new frameworks for thinking and addressing questions arising from the present context of technological, economic, political and cultural change. Photographies investigates the contemporary condition and currency of the photographic within local and global contexts. The editors seek research papers and innovative visual essays, shorter papers engaging new debates, review essays evaluating publications, cultural events, key developments, exhibitions and conferences. Photographies aims to: - establish a sustained and dynamic forum for the development of the history and theory of photography, - consider new frameworks for thinking and addressing questions arising from digital technologies and economic, political and cultural change, - examine contemporary uses and currencies of the photographic within local and global contexts, - identify, develop and discuss emergent critical debates and practices, - publish work in the humanities and social sciences which has a bearing upon our understanding of photography thereby locating debate within a wider community. Physics in Perspective seeks to bridge the gulf between physicists and non-physicists through historical and philosophical studies that typically display the unpredictable as well as the cross-disciplinary interplay of observation, experiment, and theory that has occurred over extended periods of time in academic, governmental, and industrial settings and in allied disciplines such as astrophysics, chemical physics, and geophysics. The journal also publishes first-person accounts by physicists of significant contributions they have made, biographical articles, book reviews, and guided tours of historical sites in cities throughout the world. It strives to make all articles understandable to a broad spectrum of readers – scientists, teachers, students, and the public at large.

Join the IPHS for 2011 and receive your copy of Planning Perspectives Planning Perspectives is an international peer-reviewed journal of history, planning and the built environment, publishing historical and prospective articles on aspects of city development anywhere in the world. Subjects covered link the interest of those working in architecture and planning; economic, social and political history; historical geography and historical sociology with those in the applied fields of public health, housing, environmental heritage and conservation, architecture and planning. Papers linking these topics to city development from within a historical framework are encouraged. The Journal had a substantial book review section that is global in its reach, covering both Europe and North America, as well as publications from the Middle East, Asia, South America and Africa. Planning Perspectives is the Journal of the International Planning History Society and contains an IPHS section devoted to shorter 'research in progress' papers, conference and research project reports as well as debates, discussions and short notices. IPHS members receive the journal as part of their membership.
